To the ý campus community,
On the afternoon of Monday, Oct. 13, the University Police received a report of multiple stolen e-scooters. The first scooter was taken from outside the University Union and has since been located. The second scooter was taken from the bicycle rack near the Lecture Hall and has not yet been recovered.
The University Police have identified a person of interest in connection with these thefts; however, no suspect has been apprehended at this time. The University Police believe the identified individual is the same suspect previously apprehended for similar thefts over the summer, and that this person continues to pose a threat to community members’ property.
The University Police are actively investigating this incident and encourage anyone with information to contact them at (607) 777-2393. Information can also be reported anonymously through the University Police website at: /police/anonymous-tips.html
In light of this incident, the University Police would like to provide the following tips to help keep you and your property safe:
- Remove the battery when possible: If your e-scooter has a removable battery, take it with you whenever you leave the scooter unattended. This not only helps deter theft but also prevents battery tampering or misuse.
- Use a high-quality lock: Always secure your e-scooter with a sturdy, high-quality bike lock. While no lock is completely theft-proof, inexpensive or lightweight locks can be defeated quickly with minimal tools. Invest in a heavy-duty U-lock or chain lock for better protection.
