Join Outdoor Pursuits staff on an outdoor adventure! No experience necessary. Any fees cover your guide, transportation and equipment.

Upcoming adventures
Evening Cider & Donuts Hike
- 3:30–6:30 p.m. Friday, October 10
- Chenango Valley State Park – $10
This will be an easy social hike along the forested lake side trails of our closest state park. It’s a great way to meet other outdoorsy friends and enjoy a late afternoon hike. Wear sturdy hiking boots or shoes, bring water in a small day pack or book bag. Dress for the weather. A tailgate snack will greet us when we return to the parking lot!

Foliage & Fire Tower Hike
- 8:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. Sunday, October 12
- Balsam Lake Mountain – $20
Balsam Lake Mountain at 3723 feet stands taller than anything as far as the eye can see. The fragrance of balsam fir trees on this summit only serve to add to this high mountain experience. The autumn colors make for incredible photos from the fire tower on the summit.
Sturdy hiking boots or shoes are very important. Bring a small pack with lunch, snacks, and plenty of water (1 liter) for the day. Essential clothing for the weather is a must (rain coat and synthetic clothing for warmth). This is a challenging hike, but we leave no one behind!

Bike & Hike Watkins Glen Gorge
- 9 a.m.–6 p.m. Sunday, October 19
- Watkins Glen – $25 (includes a bike rental)
A scenic canal towpath and old railroad bed that has been transformed into a bicycling path provides us with a flat ride (approximately 12 miles) and passes the cascading waters of Montour Falls. We will take a break to hike the gorge of Watkins Glen State Park and enjoy even more falling water. This trip makes for a great day of adventure away from campus. Pack a hearty lunch, snacks and a water bottle for sure. Helmets are a must.

Learn to Belay Workshop
- 3–5 p.m. Wednesday, October 22
- BOP Ropes Course – FREE
Join Outdoor Pursuits for a two-hour intro to belaying workshop where you will learn the fundamentals of belaying, including proper equipment use, knot tying, and safety checks. Gain the skills and experience necessary to pass a belay test at the local climbing gym!

Lucifer Falls Day Hike (NO CLASSES)
- 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Friday, October 24
- Robert Treman State Park – $15
Explore one of the many spectacular gorges of central New York! This 6 mile hike takes you past beautiful cascades, towering cliffs and along the awesome 115’ Lucifer Falls in Treman State Park. This is a moderate hike.
Bring plenty of water, lunch, and snacks—and don’t forget your camera (or your phone!) to capture the memories. Dress for the weather and wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots.

Susquehanna Canoe
- 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Sunday, October 26
- Susquehanna River – $35
After a safety orientation and an introduction to canoeing fundamentals, we will paddle the meandering Susquehanna. Great blue herons, kingfishers and perhaps bald eagles are a few of the bird species you could expect to see as you enjoy the calm of autumn on a river.
Strong swimming skills are required. Please bring a packed lunch and a water bottle. Don’t forget a change of clothes and a towel to keep in the van.

Moon Rise Hike
- 4:30–7 p.m. Wednesday, November 5
- Local – $5
Meet other outdoorsy-types and enjoy an early evening hike. We will take our time climbing a local hilltop to watch the sky turn orange over the Susquehanna River valley & perhaps catch the moon rise.
Hiking boots or sturdy shoes are necessary.

S’Mores & a Lean-To Hike
- 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday, November 15
- Norwich, NY – $10
Hike under a picturesque autumn forest canopy to one of the best lean-to shelters along the Finger Lakes trail! The warmth of a small fire allows us to toasted marshmallows and make s’mores during our lunch break.
Pack a lunch and a water bottle. Dress in warm layers. Pack your trail lunch, hat
& gloves in a day pack. Wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots. This will be a moderately
paced 4.5 mile loop hike over rolling terrain (no major mountains to climb!)

National Take A Hike Day – Hidden Glen

- Local – $5
Let’s celebrate National Take A Hike Day! Join Outdoor Pursuits in visiting a hidden glen not far from campus, with winding trails and a picturesque gorge.
Bring your sense of adventure, water bottle and sturdy shoes for a late afternoon hike.
